Regional County Forum on Trade and Investment (Kenya)
SID hosted a one day meeting bringing together leaders, Cabinet and MCAs as well as business community members from Kenyan counties of Kisumu, Siaya and Busia, to discuss the possibility of joint trade and investment. The meeting was graced by Her Excellency Ruth Odinga Busia, the Deputy Governor of Kisumu County.
This was the first joint meeting held between the Kenyan governments of Kisumu, Busia and Siaya Counties to jointly plan the utilization of shared natural and physical resources within the region.
The output of the stakeholder meetings is to generate citizen-focused priority areas of trade and investment. SID has already carried out county specific meetings in each of the 3 Kenyan counties with the local citizen groups, members of the business community, members of the legislative assembly, members of Cabinet as well as the top leaders, namely the Governor and Deputy governors, with their respective Economic Advisors.
As emerged during the Busia meeting, some of the priority areas for investment include the Lake Victoria and fishing industry; investment in agriculture for food security; valorization of the cotton and sorghum industries. Infrastructural proposals include the need to have the rail, road and lake transport systems developed.
Over 60 participants attended the meeting including the Deputy Governor of Kisumu County; Ministers of Trade, Industry, Tourism, as well as members of the County Assembly of the 3 counties. The meeting was held on Wednesday 25th June 2014 in Busia town, Kenya.
The project is funded by the Government of Canada through the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development. (DFATD).
