Education for Transformation: A conversation between Stephen Moseley, Mark Ginsburg, Mary Joy Pigozzi and Ana Agostino

What emerges is that, despite the different approaches of the authors, education is a fundamental human right that needs to be enhanced and properly defended in order to bring about sustainable human development. As Editor of the journal Wendy Harcourt states in her joint editorial with Ana Agostino 'education has special implications for gender inequality which can be redressed through the right kind of education and a culture which ensures that girl children exercise their right to education'.
In the words of Ana Agostino, 'Education is a human right, but it is also a privileged tool for learning about human rights in general. The practice of human rights education is very important for the construction of societies where values of solidarity, cooperation, reciprocity, non-violence, non-discrimination and celebration of diversity are recognized as essential for the possibility of living together and respecting the rights of everyone.' As Stephen Moseley says, 'Today, more education curricula at all levels are beginning to recognize and adopt an orientation to human rights that will strengthen our opportunity toward more peace, tolerance, and understanding within and among societies'.
Mark Ginsburg adds, 'Education is and should be a human right. And by helping individuals to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes, education can contribute to realizing human rights for all. ' Finally, as Mary Joy Pigozzi says, 'Sustainable development depends on a literate and skilled citizenry: people capable of making the right choices for a sustainable future'.
