East Africa Today: An interview with Mkuki Bgoya
In Episode 23, East Africa Today speaks with Mr. Mkuki Bgoya, Founder and Creative Director of Spearhead, a strategic branding firm that supports business in using design to communicate and engage more meaningfully with their clients. Mr. Bgoya sat with East Africa Today over coffee to have a sobering discussion about the state of Tanzania in light of the recent church bombing in Arusha. Have Tanzanians taken Tanzania's status as a peaceful nation for granted? Are there certain players in the country that are seeking to undermine Tanzania’s stability by evoking secular tensions? Being in the publishing industry, Mr. Bgoya is able to gauge the political and social consciousness of the country by understanding what books people like to read. We examine how the creative economy can be a tool for social transformation in Tanzania and how events like Pen & Mic can be used as a powerful outlet for people to vent their grievances.
Mr. Bgoya, an award winning communication designer, founded Spearhead in 2009. He has since advised and supported various companies in creating brand identities, brand architecture, designing websites and providing strategic vision. In addition to his branding firm, Mr. Bgoya also serves as Creative Director to Mkuki na Nyota Publishers Ltd. (MNP), an independent book publishing company that is based in Dar es Salaam. The company publishes a wide range of educational, scholarly, children’s and art books in Tanzania and East Africa for worldwide publication. MNP was established in 1991 as a response to the general absence of high quality, independent publishing in Tanzania.
Prior to establishing Spearhead, Mr. Bgyoa was a designer at The Richards Group, the largest privately owned advertising agencies in the United States. He worked on accounts for various clients such as the American Hearts Association, Metro PCS and Chick-fil-A among others.
Mr. Bgoya has a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Design and Communications from Texas A&M University.
