Communication Officer - Vacancy
SID is an international network which aims to promote socio-economic justice and foster democratic participation in the development process by addressing key global agendas related to food systems & nutrition, climate & energy, development finance, public services and global health. SID is primarily a knowledge-based organization, which makes the communication position a key function.
Through programmes and activities at national, regional and global level, SID strengthens collective knowledge and fosters joint action on people-and-planet centered development strategies, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the promotion of common goods through inclusive processes. SID’s activities are facilitated by an International Secretariat which is located in Rome (Italy) and by its main regional office in Nairobi (Kenya).
SID promotes policy change towards inclusiveness, equity and sustainability
SID’s current focus springs from its long-lasting engagement on human rights and inequalities, in particular within the African context. SID co-facilitates, or plays an active role within the facilitation of many civil platforms, including the Civil Society Financing for Development Group and the Civil Society Nutrition Group, among others. It is an active member of the Reflection Group on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and contributes to the annual publishing of the Spotlight Report on Sustainable Development. It also co-facilitates many workstreams within the Civil Society Mechanism for the Committee on World Food Security. It is an active member of the Global Network on the Right to Food and Nutrition, including the annual publishing of the Right to Food Watch. SID has recently become co-chair of the Geneva Global Health Hub.
One of SID’s main instruments for knowledge production and sharing is the Development Journal. Development has been SID’s flagship publication since its inception and enjoys broad readership within the development and academic community.
With the Communication Officer position, SID aims to better align its recognised operational pathways and knowledge tools, so as to enhance its visibility within the development fora, with policymakers and the general public at large.
The key focus and objectives of the work-plan will embrace:
|Developing and coordinate SID’s communication strategy, taking into account the existing tools and building on the shared analysis of the organization’s potentials and future goals;|
|Formulating and implement an annual communication plan, based on selected priorities and opportunities set up with the SID management team;|
|Supporting the development and coordination of SID’s website and other social media platforms, including in coordination with communications colleagues of other organizations and social movements, when the amplification of shared advocacy messages is needed;|
|In line with the agreed SID’s Communication Strategy and Plan, enhancing SID’s voice and profile on mainstream media, by identifying and/or creating meaningful media opportunities for the organization, through media relations. This includes the production of articles/ blog pieces/op-eds in selected international channels;|
|Supporting the editorial production of SID Development Journal;|
|Exploring the implementation of other communication tools such as newsletters or podcasts;|
|Supporting SID’s institutional efforts of resource mobilization as might be necessary.|
Candidates will be assessed against the following requirements:
|Has at least 3 years of experience in media communication and relations;|
|Experience in SID’s programmatic areas of work is desirable;|
|Has excellent spoken and editorial communication skills;|
|Has proven experience in producing content for various communications platforms;|
|Comfortable with English as a working language;|
|Fluency in a second UN language (Spanish as preferred language);|
|Competence of the UN context and/or understanding of similar international and multicultural settings is a plus;|
|Professional motivation at working with Civil Society Organizations and/or social movements;|
|Familiarity with and knowledge of popular content management systems for website management|
|Familiar with digital platforms to support the organization of meetings and online events.|
|Can work independently and adapt to a flexible working schedules;|
|Can work with tight deadlines;|
|Is committed, responsible and loyal to the organization and its people;|
|Has a proactive and entrepreneurial attitude within the team;|

This is most likely a remote position with flexible location.
The selected person will be offered a collaboration working contract (or, if requested, a project- based/consultancy contract could be envisaged) for one year, with the possibility of an extension. Compensation will be communicated to short listed candidates and will be based on candidates’ availability for full-time or part-time employment. More detailed information will be shared during the interviews.
