Hi Gladys,
This is a very informative and timely report on the state of ERI in Tanzania. By identifying some of the critical challenges faced by ERI in Tanzania, it provides useful insights for ERI practitioners in both Kenya and Uganda to develop models that can both benefit the industries in this sector, as well as local communities. As one who participated at the launch of the report, I must commend SID for this great initiative, and for the diversity of stakeholders (investors, industrialists, government, NGOs, local community, labour unions, and faith communities) involved in its preparation and production. Lastly, may I add that while the report clearly lays out some of the reasons why ERI have not (or are likely) not provide significant benefits to national and local economies, I would have wished to see more emphasis on development of infrastructural and technical capacity for "value-addition" locally since this is one of the major challenges faced by African countries. Botswana for instance, is now putting more emphasis along this line (see Economist March 19, 2008 "Keeping the Sparkle at home").

Once again, congratulations to SID for the fabulous work!
