‘Beyond Economics’ launch of Development journal vol. 52 n. 3 & Policy Seminar ‘Responding to the interlocked financial, climate & care crisis’ New York, 29-31 October 2009
SPEAKERS’ BIONOTES: DEVELOPMENT LAUNCH & POLICY SEMINAR
The latest issue of Development, the flagship journal of the Society for International Development, has just been published. Entitled ‘Beyond Economics’ Volume 52 number 3 takes up the challenge of rethinking the culture of economics in the wake of the current financial crisis. It explores what needs to change in economic theory and policy in order to address the food, finance, climate and (the less visible) care crises.
Two Launches and Policy Seminars
- 29-31 October, United Nations, New York
– 11 December, Institute of Social Studies, The Hague
With the support of HIVOS, the Dutch-based humanitarian organization, there will be two launches and policy seminars to continue the debates raised in ‘Beyond Economics’. The Seminars will build on the questions and issues raised in the journal in terms of what policy responses are needed to go ‘beyond economics’. Development leaders such as Jan Pronk, Stephen Marglin David Korten, Khawar Mumtaz and Lourdes Arizpe will be discussing their contributions to the journal.
The journal issue is in memory of renowned Indian academic and civil society leader Smitu Kothari and a memorial event will be held for him at the New York meeting.
