“Violence on women”, meeting with Rashida Manjoo-UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, Its Causes and Consequences, in Rome.
(Translated and adapted from the interview given to ANSA)
Rome, January 13 – “It is positive that Italy has a specific law on violence against women, but, besides repression, it is necessary to strengthen women protection and prevention.” This is the opinion of Rashida Manjoo, which visited Italy last week for a series of meetings, invited by the Association “Democratic Jurists”, the NGO Pangea and the national network of anti-violence centres. “More attention to social protection of women suffering the consequences of violence is needed, as weel as more economic resources in order to support the anti-violence centres, and more protection on women health combined with more attention to women educational needs”. According to the Special Rapporteur, Italy has made progress during the last 5 years concerning equal opportunities for women. “One of the most important concern of the Committee for application of CEDAW (the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women) has been the insufficient women representation in Italian politics. Probably thanks to the legislation on women’s quotas the situation has now improved, even if the legislation seems to guarantee women representation at national level, but not yet at local level”.
