East Africa Today: An interview with Manzi Rwegasira

In Episode 25, East Africa Today has a conversation with Mr. Manzi Rwegasira, CEO and Co-Founder of Zoop Limited, a web and mobile software company that helps clients manage their mobile money payments and aprovides mass SMS communication services. As an avid sports fan Mr. Rwegasira discusses the National Basketball Association (NBA) playoffs and which team has the best chance of winning the championship. We also discuss the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson and its impact on Mr. Rwegasira’s team, Arsenal FC. Will they win the title next year? In the podcast we discuss Mr. Rwegasira’s shift from the banking to the mobile telecommunications sector and why he sees so much promise in the ICT sector in Tanzania. What are the challenges facing startup companies in Tanzania? How do you sell creativity? Mr. Rwegasira answers these questions and also discusses School Pesa, a mobile money app that seeks to ease the burden of parents in how they pay school fees. The idea is to serve as a bursar for different schools in Tanzania and make it easier for parents to pay tuition and for schools to process the payments. In this context, we discuss how technology and innovation can improve the education system in Tanzania and beyond. 

Mr. Rwegasira is a banker by profession but also a technology enthusiast. Prior to moving back home to Tanzania, he worked in London for several years in the banking sector. His career began as an investment banking analyst at Bank of America (BofA) in New York and London where he covered mergers and acquisitions in the natural resources industry. After his stint with BofA, Mr. Rwegasira spent over three years at Barclays doing mergers and acquisitions in the financial services sector. During his time at Barclays he worked on a number of high profile transactions such as the acquisition of Lehman Brothers in 2008 and sale of Barclays Global Investors (BGI) in 2009. He also spent some time with the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) as a Strategy and Planning Manger helping devise corporate strategy and executing merger and acquisitions transactions.

Mr. Rwegasira holds an MSc in Finance from the Rotterdam School of Management in The Netherlands.
