Joint SID-Hivos press release

The launch of the journal took place on the occasion of the last lecture of the 2011-2012 SID NL lecture series The State in a Globalizing World. Hilary Wainwright, research director at the Transnational Institute (TNI), and co-editor of Red Pepper delivered a lecture on 'Rethinking the state in the context of financial, environmental and social chaos'.

In our rapid changing societies, it is often the state that codifies what society has already developed and accepted in terms of social change and innovation. We need such innovation and social transformation in order to cope with the challenges of new scarcities. What role has the state, if any, in these processes? And what kind of state?
